WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) is announcing a joint press conference with the National Association of Letter Carriers on Tuesday, August 18, at the U.S. Post Office building at 308 West Britton Road. At the press conference, Congresswoman Horn will discuss the emergency faced by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and the need for Congress to fund and protect USPS. Members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), including NALC Branch President Ken Mayfield, will also attend the press conference.

Postal Press Conference with Congresswoman Horn
Time: 1:00PM CT, Tuesday, August 18
Location: U.S. Post Office, 308 West Britton Road, Oklahoma City
Participants: Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5), the National Association of Letter Carriers
Description: Policy changes under the newly appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy have reduced mail deliveries and overtime hours, resulting in massive mail backlogs that have delayed critical communications and packages, including prescription drugs. USPS also faces a funding shortfall, due in part to requirements that the agency pre-fund retiree benefits. The funding shortfall has also been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Oklahomans rely on the U.S. Postal Service to keep their businesses running, to get prescription medications, to vote, and to stay connected,” said Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5). “Whether they face rain, sleet, snow, or a pandemic, our postal workers keep America running. As our nation struggles to cope with COVID-19, I'm fighting to keep USPS funded, put a stop to letter and package backlogs, and ensure on time delivery of critical mail. Our health, our businesses, even our democracy are on the line. We must protect the Postal Service.”

USPS is an important resource for America’s veterans. Eighty percent of veterans receive their medications by mail. Each year the VA sends out 120 million prescriptions using the Postal Service, with deliveries arriving daily to about 330,000 veterans across the country.

USPS is also a lifeline for small businesses. According to a 2019 USPS report, more than 70% of small businesses have used USPS to ship mail within the past six months, and more than half of small businesses say they ship with the Post Office most frequently.
