Rep. Horn Votes No on Kaine War Powers Resolution

Washington, March 11, 2020 | Chris MacKenzie (202-309-7010)

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – On Thursday, Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) voted against the Kaine War Powers resolution when it passed the House. The bill, which now heads to the President’s desk for consideration, directs the President to terminate the use of U.S. Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran or any part of its government or military, with certain exceptions.

“My vote today on the Kaine War Powers Resolution was not a go-ahead for the President to engage in any military conflict,” said Congresswoman Horn. “I want to see both parties work together to pass an updated Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF). The AUMF defines where and when Armed Forces can be used, but the last time Congress passed an AUMF was in 2002. We must update existing AUMFs to account for current security threats. There’s a right and wrong way to keep a check on the Administration and make long-term national security decisions. Partisan politics is the wrong way. Using our constitutional authority to set clear and strategic boundaries about how and when Armed Forces are used is the right way.”

Since coming to office, Congresswoman Horn has twice voted to update 2001 AUMF to explicitly prevent the President from engaging in a reckless war with Iran. Congresswoman Horn has also voted twice to repeal the 2002 AUMF which was enacted to confront Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq, a regime that has not existed for 15 years.
