WASHINGTON, DC – The National Education Association (NEA) has released its annual report card highlighting lawmaker records in the 116th Congress. Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) received an A grade from the NEA for her votes to strengthen public education funding, address the student debt crisis, pass the Equality Act, support education professionals, and more. NEA is the parent organization for the Oklahoma Education Association (OEA), which includes 40,000 teachers, counselors, librarians and other education professionals. Congresswoman Horn was the only member of the Oklahoma congressional delegation to receive an A grade.

“Public education is the best investment we can make in our future,” said Congresswoman Horn. “Oklahoma’s educators work tirelessly to provide our students with world-class instruction, and I’m proud to have their backs here in Congress. We won some important fights for our students and public schools over the past year, from increased funding for early education to critical support for schools near military bases and tribal lands that have a smaller tax base. Our work for Oklahoma’s public schools is far from over. Every day, our teachers, counselors, coaches, and librarians give their all to our students, and we need to make sure they have the resources and tools they need to do their jobs.”

“Congresswoman Horn earned an “A” rating because of her accessibility and willingness to talk to educators about pressing issues – and then taking bold action on those issues,” said OEA President Alicia Priest. “Not only does Rep. Horn say she supports public schools, she consistently votes for issues that support our schools and our students.”

Congresswoman Horn has fought for bipartisan investments in PreK-12 education to provide teachers and public schools critical support. In December, Congress passed a bipartisan government funding bill which included increased funding for programs including Head Start early education, IDEA Grants to support education for children with disabilities, Impact Aid funding for schools near military bases and tribal lands, and more. Congresswoman Horn has also cosponsored bipartisan legislation to support professional development programs for teachers and additional funding to train teachers to teach English as a second language. This month, Congresswoman Horn brought Oklahoma’s 2020 Teacher of the Year as her guest to the State of the Union.
