OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – On Wednesday, Congresswoman Kendra Horn announced in an op-ed in the Oklahoman that she will bring Oklahoma’s 2020 Teacher of the Year Jena Nelson as her guest to next week’s State of the Union Address. Nelson is an 8th Grade Composition and Enhancement Teacher at Deer Creek Middle School in Edmond. The State of the Union is scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, at 8:00PM CT. “Our teachers are everyday heroes.” said Congresswoman Horn. “I’m honored to have Jena Nelson as my guest at this year’s State of the Union Address. Jena Nelson is an exceptional teacher who often says that public school saved her life. As a teacher, she is committed to providing the same support that she found in public schools to Oklahoma’s next generation. When teachers give their all to our students, we must give our all to supporting teachers, plain and simple.” Read Congresswoman Horn’s full op-ed here. Congresswoman Horn has fought for bipartisan investments in PreK-12 education that would provide teachers and public schools with increased support. In December, Congress passed a bipartisan government funding bill which included increased funding for programs including Head Start, IDEA Grants, Title I, and Impact AID. Congresswoman Horn has also cosponsored bipartisan legislation to support professional development programs for teachers and additional funding to train teachers to teach English as a second language. ### |
