Congresswoman Horn Votes for Bipartisan Resolution Rebuking President over Syria Withdrawal

In an overwhelming, bipartisan 354-60 vote, the House of Representatives delivered a strong condemnation of the President’s decision to withdraw American forces from Syria, which has thrown the region into bloody chaos and allowed for massive Turkish attacks on U.S.-Kurdish allies. 129 Republicans, including the top three House Republican leaders, supported the resolution in a rare split from the President.

“The Administration’s decision to abandon our Kurdish allies in Syria has created a humanitarian crisis and poses a threat to our national security. This irresponsible action has set in motion a resurgence of ISIS, an invasion by Turkey, and gives Russia a strong foothold in Syria,” Congresswoman Horn said.

“This shortsighted decision sets us back in the war against ISIS, and it abruptly abandons years of policy built on collaboration with our allies to fight ISIS terrorists,” Horn continued.

In the Administration’s hasty decision to move U.S. troops out of Syria, U.S. military forces were unable to transfer approximately sixty high value ISIS terrorist detainees out of Kurdish-run wartime prisons. Also, in the same area, hundreds of ISIS sympathizers escaped from another prison.

Russian troops moved into the region almost immediately, occupying former U.S. military positions and establishing control over this strategic area. This further undermines the prospect of future U.S. presence and influence in Syria.

“As a member of the Armed Services Committee, I stand with House and Senate leaders in both parties who agree that Congress must work to repair the damage this decision has caused by placing severe economic sanctions on Turkey and expressing strong Congressional opposition to this dangerous policy. I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to safeguard our armed forces as well as protect our strategic interests around the world in the war against terror,” Horn stated.
